How Do Credit Card Transactions Work?
- Cardholder elects to pay for purchase by credit card.
- Merchant swipes or key enters credit card and purchase information.
- If approved by issuer, acquirer credits the merchant account and submits the transaction
for settlement.
- Back end processor pays the acquirer and debits the issuer account, forwarding the
transaction to the issuer.
- Acquirer funds merchant account.
- Issuer posts the transaction to the cardholder account and sends monthly statement
to cardholder.
- Cardholder receives monthly statement and pays issuer.
